🌱 Care Guide for Skimmia japonica

Light:

  • Prefers partial to full shade (too much sun can scorch the leaves).
  • Best in dappled woodland-like conditions.

Soil:

  • Likes moist, well-draining, acidic soil (pH 5–6).
  • Avoid alkaline soils, which can cause yellowing (chlorosis).

Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist, especially in dry periods.
  • Avoid waterlogging.

Fertilizer:

  • Use an ericaceous (acid-loving) fertilizer in spring.
  • Mulch with leaf mold or compost to keep soil acidic and moist.

Pruning:

  • Light pruning after flowering (late spring).
  • Remove dead or weak stems.

Temperature:

  • Hardy in cooler climates (USDA zones 6–9).
  • Protect from strong cold winds and hot afternoon sun.

Propagation:

  • Semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

⚠️ Note: Berries are toxic if eaten, so keep away from pets and children.
